Madison Man Identified After Fatal I-39/90 Crash Near Mile Marker 142 Northbound Exit Ramp in Dane County on Aug. 30

MADISON, WI — A 40-year-old Madison man died in a crash on I-39/90 near the mile marker 142 northbound exit ramp on Aug. 30. The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office identified him as Fontel J. Brown.

Authorities said Brown was pronounced dead at the scene after they were called to the crash around 7:30 p.m. A forensic examination completed the next day confirmed he died from injuries sustained in the collision.

Victim identified by Dane County medical examiner

The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office said Brown lived in Madison. His name was released after investigators finished the initial forensic review tied to the crash.

The office said the examination on Aug. 31 confirmed the cause of death was crash-related injuries. Officials have also said additional testing is still underway as part of the investigation.

Crash happened near the northbound exit ramp on I-39/90

The collision happened near mile marker 142 on the northbound side of the interstate. That stretch of I-39/90 carries heavy traffic through the Madison area and is a major travel corridor in Dane County.

Officials have not released a detailed description of how the crash happened or how many vehicles were involved. They have also not said whether weather, speed or another factor played a role.

Emergency crews responded around 7:30 p.m.

Responders were called to the scene at about 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 30. Brown was found dead at the scene, according to the medical examiner.

No other injuries were included in the information released by authorities. The exact sequence of events leading up to the crash has not been publicly outlined.

State Patrol and medical examiner continue investigation

The Wisconsin State Patrol and the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating the fatal crash. Their work includes reviewing the circumstances of the wreck and the findings from the forensic exam.

The medical examiner said more testing is being done, which could add to what investigators know about the death. For now, Brown’s identity and the time and place of the crash are the main details released publicly.

What has been released so far about the fatal wreck

Officials have confirmed only a limited set of facts: the victim’s identity, the date, the location and the fact that the death was caused by crash injuries. That leaves several questions unanswered as the investigation moves forward.

Until investigators finish their review, authorities have not released additional information about the cause of the collision or whether any citations were issued. The case remains in the hands of the Wisconsin State Patrol and the medical examiner.
